A molecule has been identified that can "reprogram" the brain's defenses against Alzheimer's.
José Vicente Sánchez Mut, a biologist with a degree from the University of Valencia, leads the UMH Neuroscience team that has identified an experimental molecule capable of "reprogramming" the brain's immune cells to recover some of their protective function against Alzheimer's disease.
Sánchez Mut explains that "The most significant finding is that we have identified a molecule capable of restoring the protective function of microglia." "In Alzheimer's disease, these cells stop functioning correctly. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to reverse the process and identify new therapeutic and research avenues to combat the disease."
